Things to Do in Springfield, MO

Get outside and enjoy nature.

Springfield has numerous parks and attractions where you can appreciate the great outdoors. First, be sure to visit Nathanael Greene Park, which is home to Springfield Botanical Gardens, the Gray-Campbell Farmstead (which is the oldest cabin in Springfield), and Lake Drummond. It also includes Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden, a beautiful escape from the city that includes a large koi lake, moon bridge, meditation garden, tea house, and traditional Japanese garden landscaping. Be sure to visit in the spring to see the cherry blossoms!

From Nathanael Greene Park, you can also reach the South Creek Greenway. A six-mile trail, the greenway is ideal for people looking to walk, run, or bike in the fresh air.

If you’re looking for another place to walk or hike within the city limits, head to Springfield Conservation Nature Center. The 80 acres of natural beauty are an ideal place to reconnect with nature. Plus, there are three miles of walking trails.

Interested in spelunking? You’ll love Fantastic Caverns, a gorgeous cave discovered in 1862. Plus, tours of the cave use Jeep-drawn trams, making it accessible to all people, regardless of physical limitations. Also, because the cave is so far down beneath the earth’s surface, it remains a chill 60°F all year round! So if you visit during summer, it’ll feel refreshing; if you visit during winter, it’ll seem pleasantly warm.

Finally, if you want to enjoy nature but the weather outside is dreadful, consider visiting Wonders of Wildlife at Bass Pro Shops. This brand-new museum/aquarium includes a collection of 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, and birds. It’s immersive, fascinating, and great for all ages.

Enjoy some fantastic food and delectable drinks.

Who doesn’t like to eat delicious food? There are so many fantastic options in town, so we’re going to highlight just a few of our favorites.

First, we have to mention Askinosie Chocolate, a local chocolate company that makes delectable chocolates by hand. They source all of their cocoa beans directly from smallholder farmers and share their profits with them! If you’re looking for another sweet treat, stop by local favorite Pineapple Whip, a chain of dessert stands that sell fruit-juice-based, dairy-free soft serve. It’s delicious, especially when you want something refreshing on a hot summer day!

Next, let’s look at some savory food options. Breakfast at Gailey’s is a must-do, but be sure to get there early on weekends! For fresh and tasty food, you can’t go wrong with Tea Bar & Bites – and they also have a variety of delicious teas and desserts. Some other tasty picks include Cafe Cusco (Peruvian cuisine), Civil Kitchen (elevated pub food), Farmers Gastropub (British-inspired fare), Ocean Zen (sushi), and Flame Steakhouse (a steakhouse).

Finally, craft beer lovers must check out Springfield’s continually expanding craft brewery scene. You can’t go wrong with Mother’s Brewing Company, Tie & Timber Beer Company, or 4×4 Brewing Company. Looking for a smooth cup of joe? Some local favorites include Architect Coffee, Kingdom Coffee, and The Coffee Ethic.

Cheer for the home team.

If you’re a sports fan, be sure to check out the Springfield Cardinals Baseball team, which plays at Hammons Field. The team is currently gearing up for the 2022 season, which starts in April and continues into September. If you’re more of a basketball fan, head to the JQH Arena to enjoy some Missouri State Bears basketball. The arena also hosts concerts, performances, speakers, and more. Plus, local universities Missouri State University, Drury University, and Evangel University all have vibrant athletic programs.

Immerse yourself in the arts.

Whether you consider yourself a patron of the arts or a novice, Springfield has a variety of cultural attractions worth exploring. In addition to the Springfield Art Museum, be sure to stop by downtown during First Friday Art Walk, a monthly event in which local galleries open their doors and showcase new artwork. If you’re more interested in the performing arts, check out Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing ArtsGillioz Theatre, and Springfield Little Theatre (which performs at Landers Theatre). Finally, if you’re looking to see a movie on the big screen, visit The Moxie, a community-supported arthouse theater.
